IN DETAIL:

One week prior to our shoot we’ll have a digital “pre-production call” to talk everything from lighting, angle, prop styling, composition, plating techniques, cooking methods and so much more in order to lay a solid foundation for an immersive in-studio styling day.  Friday evening we’ll welcome you with dinner, your styling kit, and live instructional food styling demonstrations.

Saturday morning begins early at the iconic Ferry Plaza Farmer’s Market in San Francisco.  We’ll shop the most beautiful produce and return to the studio to cook and shoot our way through recipes and food styling stations designed to give you hands-on experience with various food styling techniques.  Props will be provided and a professional photographer will be standing by to help you dial in your lighting and camera settings. Once we're wrapped we'll pop the champagne and celebrate the day with high fives and an image review session, plus next steps to continue your styling education.

Select topics covered throughout the workshop include:

Defining your edible brand

Food styling as story telling.  Learn how to use food to create your unique edible aesthetic, develop a signature photo and food style, and deliver a consistent brand experience for your readers.

Tools of the trade

You'll learn to use your core food styling kit as well as other unique food styling tools to bring life and longevity under the lens to your food.

The food styling approach

Five food styling questions to filter every food photo you take through plus techniques for styling everything from cheese pulls to ice cream.

The perfect pair:  food + props

Learn how to select and compose props to compliment your food and elevate your story then build on that with practical advice on how to create a signature prop collection.  Even with space and $$ constraints.

Food styling fundamentals

Learn to select the right recipes for food photography (or how to write your own), how to shop and source ingredients, how to style your food for different lighting set ups and camera angles, principles of plate composition, plus practical direction on cooking for the camera.

Food styling for social media

Tips and tricks for styling and editing food photos for social media.

Hands-on food styling

Cook, style, and shoot through a thoughtful selection of recipes from beginning to end with real time, hands-on guidance.  Style and compose final plated dishes, process shots, and still life photos to give you exposure to different styling techniques.  You'll leave with an arsenal of images to add to your blog or portfolio.

FAQs

What's the cost of the food styling workshop?

$1,395.00 plus the cost of Saturday morning farmer's market groceries.  All pantry items for your recipes will be provided.

Who is this food styling workshop for?

Food bloggers, photographers, and aspiring food stylists looking to hone their food styling skills.  Styling and photography go hand in hand but please note this is not a course in photography.  A professional photographer will be on hand to help you dial in your lighting and settings but you should own your own camera and be familiar with it’s functions in manual mode.  A set will be provided for aspiring stylists.

I can make the studio date but I'm booked up the day of the webinar.  Should I still sign up?

Absolutely.  If you're free on the studio day but can't make the live webinar, not to worry.  The pre-production call will be recorded and available for review prior to our studio day.

Can I pay the registration fee in installments?

Yes.  Shoot me an email for details.

What is the refund policy?

Because this workshop is LIVE, the registration fee is nonrefundable.  Your registration can, however, be transferred.

What if I can’t make this one?

Sign up to get notified of the next one!  Live workshops will be hosted with the seasons.

What should I bring?

If you're a food blogger, your camera, tripod, and laptop.  A detailed list will be provided closer to workshop time.

Will food props be provided?

Yes.

What if I’m coming from out of town?

Amazing.  Please note that transportation and lodging are not included in the price of the workshop.  For questions on travel please email me.

What if I’m not a photographer and I just want to learn food styling?

Awesome.  This course is most definitely for you too!  You’ll get a solid foundation in the fundamentals of food styling and great exposure to the job itself.  This course will jump start your styling career and make you more marketable as an assistant.
